Exuberantly Creole, Mauritius forms part of the Mascarene Archipelago, 3000 km East to Africa. Independent since 1968 Mauritius has a fascinating past, an inviting present and a rosy future. Mauritius is an ideal destination all year long thanks to pleasant temperatures in winter (22°C) like summer (31°C). But the windy season is during the austral winter from March to mid-December.

 

Passport
Visitors in possession of a passport valid for a further 6 months at minimum and a return ticket may stay up to 6 months depending of your country of origin. No visa is required for nationals of EU countries.  

   

Flights
The international airport of Mauritius (MRU), is located at about 55km from Bras d'Eau.

 

Time
GMT + 4 (+2h in comparison to France in Mauritian winter and +4h in Mauritian summer)

 

Transport
Bus service is available, but using it to cross the island involves many transfers, and  it takes a lot of time. Taxis are plentiful and not very expensive but be sure to agree on the price of the ride beforehand.

Driving
In Mauritius vehicles drive on the left, as in Britain.

 

Language
English is the official language, but Creole (derived from French) is used by everybody, and French is the most commonly spoken language.

The Mauritian rupee (Rs) is divided into 100 cents. Coins range from 1 cent to 5 rupees; banknotes from 10 to 2,000 rupees. 1 euro = 40 rupees.

 

Credit cards
The main international credit cards are accepted everywhere.

 

Shops
Shops are generally open Monday to Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday to noon; and may also be open on Sunday morning.

The international access code is 00. The country code for Mauritius is 230; there are no area codes.

 

Electricity
220/240 volts AC. Plugs vary from two round pins to three square pins UK-style, so bring an all-purpose adaptor.

 

Health

No vaccin needed for people coming from Europe.
